Job Opening: Summer Intern

The Norwalk Public Library seeks an energetic student to participate in a limited-term, paid, part-time Library Summer Internship.

Skills and responsibilities:
This is an opportunity for the intern to explore their talents and perspectives to help impact their community. While working closely with our team, the intern will develop a connected learning project that advances the library’s mission to serve all residents of the community and the surrounding townships. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, be flexible, have an interest in serving diverse populations, and have an interest in working in or learning about libraries. 

Example of Essential Duties:

  • Meet regularly with the Library Director.
  • Craft a meaningful library project under the guidance of their mentor, which will be completed through the course of the internship.
  • Write about the internship and connected learning project experience.
  • Maintain regular, punctual, and predictable attendance.
  • Work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds and all ages.

Other Duties:  

The following are the regular duties for this position. These duties are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Works with library staff on various activities and outreach to the community.
  • Works closely with library staff to learn about library operations.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly public space within the library building and grounds.
  • Contributes to a positive, team-oriented work environment by being helpful, respectful,  and approachable to staff and the public. 
  • Provide customer service to patrons.

Qualifications: 

The requirements below represent the qualities, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to perform the job’s essential functions.  

  • Willingness to craft and execute a Connected Learning Project with the support of library staff. 
  • Ability to study, conduct research, and complete the Connected Learning Project
  • Willingness to work enthusiastically and effectively with children, teenagers, and adults in the library and community. 
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask. 
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail. 
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Good communication skills include oral, written, and listening skills.
  • Ability to ask for help or guidance when needed.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Education:
Interns must be entering their junior or senior year of high school or first year of college (ages 16 – 19 eligible to apply).

Starting wage: $13.00/hour

Work hours: 5-10 hours per week. Some evenings and weekends may be required.  

Supplemental Information:
This position will run from June 2, 2025, to August 30, 2025. Intern must work a minimum of 60 hours to a maximum of 120 hours during this assignment. The right candidate may be eligible for continued employment beyond the internship period.
