Library Assistant – Norwalk Public Library
The Norwalk Public Library, located in the village of Norwalk, WI, seeks a dynamic, creative, and motivated individual to fill an open position to assist in fulfilling our mission of “providing materials and services which fulfill educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of the entire community in an atmosphere that is welcoming, respectful, and businesslike.” This person will play an integral role in library service and help sustain our history of progressive programming and excellent materials available to all. Library Director.
Summary of Work
The library assistant will perform the library staff’s everyday duties. The Norwalk Library Assistant is a front-line staff member whose primary responsibilities include providing direct patron service, performing clerical work and community outreach work, and handling aspects of processing and cataloging items within the library.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Post-high school coursework and/or some college coursework required;
- Four-year college degree, commensurate military experience, or equivalent continuing education preferred;
- High-quality customer service skills;
- Must be able to organize, plan, schedule, coordinate, and evaluate programming for all ages;
- Must have excellent verbal and written skills, including the ability to convey information in educational, instructional, and creative manners;
- Advanced computer skills and Internet search techniques;
- Experience working with people of all ages and public speaking experience highly desirable;
- Knowledge of current and classic authors and movies is a plus.
- Self-starter and ability to work alone.
- Ability to work effectively with library staff and the general public.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Duties will include, but are not limited to, helping patrons locate library materials, answering patrons’ reference questions, providing readers’ advisory assistance, teaching computer classes, putting together displays, planning library programs, and maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of the library.
Physical Demands and Requirements
- Strong proficiency in typing and a working knowledge of computer applications.
- Frequent lifting of more than 10 pounds
- Pushing and pulling loaded book carts
- Crouching and kneeling near low shelves
- Reaching above eye level – sometimes with the use of a step stool
- Ability to read size 12 font or smaller on item labels.
Wage Range
The candidate will work approximately 12-20 hours/week at a rate of $10.00-$12.00/hour based on experience and education. Additional hours may be available as a substitute during staff time off.

Note: This is a part-time, non-exempt, at-will position with no benefits available except as state and federal law requires.
